BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Garrison; After ERNEST RANCOULET (France, act. 1870 - 1915), France, late 19th century.
Gilded calamine and onyx.
Preserves key and pendulum.
Presents faults and breakage in one of the base.
Measurements: 51 x 33 x 16 cm; 48,5 x 25 x 15 cm.
Garrison of sculptural conception made of onyx and gilded bronze. The piece eliminates the usual candlesticks or candelabra that usually accompany the central clock and in this case establishes as accompaniment two round sculptures in gilded bronze. One of them represents cupid, while the other shows a young woman holding a branch. Both sculptures stand out for the lightness and movement achieved by the sculptor through a delicate work, both in the conception of the postures and in the creation of the details of the hair and the folds in both garments. This same work can be seen in the sculpture of Hebe, the cupbearer of the gods, which is arranged as the top of the clock. This piece, central to the composition, is defined by gilded bronze legs in the shape of a boar's hoof and a lower garland also in bronze, an onyx body and a white dial with black Arabic numerals and openwork gilded hands.
The piece, specifically the sculptural part is very reminiscent of the work of the sculptor born in the French town of Bordeaux in the mid-nineteenth century, Ernest Rancoulet, who was trained as a disciple of Lequesne and at the Municipal School of his hometown. He exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1870, and his works were widely published in bronze. His pieces, mainly of small format following the taste of the time, represent mainly mythological, historical and allegorical characters, worked with a careful, meticulous and detailed style of realistic heritage. Ernest Rancoulet is currently represented in the Museum of Reims, as well as in European and American private collections.
