In Murcia, the nativity scene tradition is very deep-rooted, and this type of terracotta figures is part of this rich popular culture. The old woman with basket that we show here is part of a sample of village types with which the disinterested generosity of the people of the village is represented, as an integral part of the diversity of characters that come to adore the baby Jesus. The woman joins her hands and intertwines her fingers in a prayerful attitude, at the same time she tilts her head in an affectionate gesture and bows her torso. Her worn clothes, with mimics, are a symbol of exterior humility that translates into the interior. A deep naturalism is reflected in the expression and in the way of resolving the qualities and folds.
