In this devotional oil painting the author offers us a prototypical image of the representation of St. Jerome, with the wise aspect that gives him the long gray beard. Next to him, a lion reminds us of the episode in which the saint removed a thorn and cleaned its wound, the beast becoming tame and remaining faithful to its master from then on. The lion is thus a symbol of loyalty in this context. A book open before him reminds us that St. Jerome translated the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate), so this symbol reflects his work as a scholar.
