This work is modeled after the famous painting by Antonio da Corregio entitled "The Nativity", which belongs to the collection of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. The work was commissioned from Correggio in October 1522 by Alberto Pratoneri for the family chapel in the church of San Prospero in Reggio Emilia. The painting was finally transferred to Dresden in 1746. The work is based on compositions by Titian, thus using the candle as a light resource to structure the scene. The scene revolves around the Child, surrounded by Mary's arms, with a group of shepherds on the left, of whom the bearded figure is depicted in the same position as Jerome in the Madonna of St. Jerome (Correggio) (c. 1523). This work pointed the way to future Lombard research into luminist effects, and was used as a model by painters such as Camillo Procaccini, Luca Cambiasi, Guido Reni and Domenichino, and even later, by Barocci and Maratta.
A copy made by Therese Concordia Maron in 1724 is preserved in the chapel of the Palais Rohan in Strasbourg. German painter who worked most of her life in Rome. She was the older sister of the best known painter, Anton Raphael Mengs. At the age of sixteen she moved with her family to Rome. From 1741 she worked as a miniaturist and pastel painter; she produced several enamels and portraits, including a self-portrait and a portrait of her younger sister Julia. In 1765 she married Anton von Maron, an Austrian portrait painter, a pupil of her brother.
