BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Console; Rome, c. 1790.
Marble top and wooden structure, carved, gilded and polychrome.
It has restorations on the top and structure.
Measurements: 92 x 141 x 58 cm.
Eighteenth century console with marble top and wooden structure. It is clear the inspiration in decorative elements taken either from the Renaissance or from the classical Antiquity, as it is usual in the works that are framed in the Neoclassicism. An example of this is the legs conceived as a stipe with a fluted body, like that of a column. In the skirt a delicate work of carved laceria can be appreciated, with golden scrolls and tornapuntas that stand out on the polychrome. In the corners and in the center the carving acquires greater prominence, with fleurons in the corners and a central figure representing a young woman dressed in a classical manner with a cornucopia in her hands, so it is deduced that it could be the representation of the goddess Hera.
The realization of consoles was widely recognized in Rome between the second half of the seventeenth century and early eighteenth century, and derived directly from those made during the early Baroque by artists of Bernini's immediate environment, such as the famous tables of the Naiad and the Triton. These were pieces of furniture where the carving predominates, worked at various levels of relief and even with details in round bulge, independent figures that can come to replace parts of the structure (especially the supports). These tables were display furniture, richly decorated and characterized by a high quality. On the other hand, as they approach the 18th century, as in this particular case, more and more symmetrical forms will be seen in them, seeking undulation, movement, but also a certain balance, as can be seen in this piece, and prioritizing vegetal decoration.
