BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

EMILE BOISSEAU (France 1842-1923)
"Captive love".
Bronze.
Presents signed plaque.
Measurements: 79 x 25 x 27 cm,
Bronze sculpture representing the figure of a half-naked woman accompanied by a child, clearly inspired by the classical representation of Venus and Cupid. Emile André Boisseau also known as Emile Boisseau, was a French sculptor. He began working in Bourges in 1857, under the direction of a sculptor, restoring diocesan buildings. He then entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was taught by Auguste Dumont and later by Jean-Marie Bonnassieux. From 1868, Boisseau exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, where he showed busts of contemporary figures and works in the neoclassical style.
Among his most famous works at the Salon were "L'Amour captif" (Captive Love), from 1891, and "Le Crépuscule" (Twilight), a group of marbles from 1883. In 1882, Emile Boisseau sculpted a statue of Beaumarchais for the façade of the Paris City Hall. A marble version of his 1884 "Défense du foyer" was acquired by the Paris City Hall, which erected it on the Place du Champ de Mars.
In 1888, Emile Boisseau was appointed director of the Romain Rolland Museum of Art and History in Clamecy. He donated several of his sculptures to the museum. He was vice-president of the Société des artistes français, president of the syndicat de la propriété artistique and officer of the Légion d'honneur from 1900.
