BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Italian school of the late 17th century-early 18th century. After GIAMBOLOGNA (Flanders, 1529 - Florence, 1608).
"The abduction of the Sabine women".
Sculpture in patinated bronze. Green veined marble pedestal.
Presents marks of use, wear and some chipping at the base of the marble.
Measurements: 35 x 15 x 13 cm (sculpture); 18.5 cm (height of pedestal); 17 cm (diameter of pedestal).

The present work follows the model of Giambologna's work realized in 1589 for the ducal collection of La Loggia in Piazza della Signoria in Florence, which was transferred in 2008 to the Galleria dell'Accademia (a copy took the place of the original). It is a sculpture of great quality, in which the flesh is softened with naturalism by the pressure of the twitching fingers, the morbidity contrasts with the muscles marked and gestures printed compositional dynamism, condensing the drama in a single movement. The sculptural group is composed of two male figures and a female one, on top, following a marked "serpentinata" line, usual in certain works of the Italian Renaissance. It shows the episode of classical mythology in which the Sabine women are abducted by the founders of the city of Rome during a banquet organized by Romulus; later, the legendary Sabine king Titus Tatius declared war on Rome, but the same women, already married and with children, intervened to prevent the massacre, desisting all fights and achieving peace and partnership between the two peoples.
