Born in Madrid, the sculptor José de Ramón Carrera moved to Bilbao in 1943. In the Basque city he received ten years later the first prize of modeling of the School of Arts and Crafts of Bilbao and in 1954 the special mention of modeling in the same school. In 1959 he had his first exhibition in Vizcaya. A year later he worked in Paris in the workshop of Alicia Peñalba, winner of the Sao Paulo Biennial. In 1961 he moved to London and three years later he returned to Bilbao. In 1966 he participated in the foundation of the Emen Group of the Basque School, together with Agustín Ibarrola, Mari Dapena and Vicente Larrea, among others. Between 1981 and 1985 he taught sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Bilbao. His first individual exhibition took place at the Mikeldi Gallery in Bilbao in 1972, followed by sculpture exhibitions at the Ciudadela in Pamplona (1974), Aritza Gallery in Bilbao (1976), Tótem Gallery in Barcelona (1977), Windsor Gallery, Aula de Cultura de la C.A.M. in Bilbao and Casa Municipal de Cultura in Bilbao. de Bilbao and Casa Municipal de Cultura de Ondarroa (1981), Sala de Cultura de Okendo (1989), Windsor Kulturgintza de Bilbao (2003) where he shows a retrospective with works made between 1970 and 1980, or Museo de Euskal Herria de Gernika with the exhibition entitled Ramón Carreraren Gernika (2011). Currently his works are present in the collections of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao, Museo de la Solidaridad de Chile, Barakaldo and Getxo City Councils, Ciudadela de Pamplona, Universidad de Deusto, Alfa-Arte Collection of Eibar, Fundación Telefónica, Caja Laboral Collection or in the Fundación Vizcaína Aguirre.
