BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish school; late fifteenth century.
"Immaculate Conception".
Carved and polychrome wood.
Presents faults and wear.
Measurements: 156 x 61 x 30 cm.
Marian representation carved in wood whose workmanship shows the transition between the Gothic style and the remnant. The Virgin is worked only in the front area showing that it was originally intended for frontal contemplation. The Virgin's face is serene, with a perfect symmetry of the features that have been naturalized, balancing the timeless aura of the image with a certain humanization and naturalism. Despite the schematism that still lingers from previous eras. The body is covered with a tunic whose vertical folds accentuate the balanced canon of the figure.
Gothic sculpture is the sculptural style that corresponds to the Gothic period of Western art, and therefore extends from the late twelfth century to the early fifteenth century by Christian Western Europe. This style that remained during three centuries approximately in apogee, was born in two places of great religious, political and cultural prestige, the Basilica of Saint Denis and the cathedral of Chartres belonging to the Ile de France, it was a type of sculpture that evolved from the Romanesque and later "dissolved" in what would be the sculpture of the Renaissance and Mannerism. It was called "Gothic", since it was believed to be the fruit of the culture of the Goths. Gothic sculpture was born closely linked to architecture, as can be seen in the decoration of the great cathedrals and other religious buildings, but over time it gained independence. During the first stage an austere, stylized style was cultivated, with elongated proportions and a general hieratic appearance, which wanted to convey spirituality, moving away from the real anatomy of a body. But he soon evolved towards a greater naturalism, towards realism, from a progressive absorption of classical influences and a deeper observation of nature. Despite being treated independently, Gothic sculpture, even in its final stages, continued to be integrated into architectural decoration.
