DESCRIPTION

Clock; France, early nineteenth century.
Gilded bronze and enameled porcelain.
Preserves key.
Measurements: 25 x 12 x 12 cm (clock); 22 x 8 x 8 x 8 cm (candlestick).
Garrison formed by two candlesticks and a clock that combine in its design in gilded bronze and porcelain. The candlesticks have the same aesthetics with round bronze base and figurative bust as an angel. This supports the base of the blue porcelain lighter with white cartouche decorated with flowers and finally the lighter itself in bronze. The clock, the central piece of the garnish, rises on a stepped bronze base that gives way to a body of architectural character that seems similar to a small temple with a semicircular arch. In the central zone a porcelain plate shows the representation of a landscape. Finally, the upper zone ends with the clock case with Arabic numerals and gilded openwork hands.
During this century, France underwent significant changes, from the French Revolution to the Industrial Revolution. Trimmings became a symbol of status and sophistication, being used in furniture, textiles and architecture. Lush ornamentation, influenced by styles such as neoclassicism and romanticism, sought to evoke a connection to the past while embracing modernity. Artists and designers such as Charles Percier and Pierre François Léonard Fontaine, among others, explored new forms and materials, elevating trim to an art in its own right. Their innovations influenced the production of decorative objects, creating a dialogue between functionality and aesthetics that endures to this day.
