This French decorative clock, dated around 1900, is a piece that fuses elements of sculpture and functionality with a style that evokes romanticism and classicism. The central structure of the clock is flanked by two female figures in a graceful pose, who are dressed in flowing robes in terracotta tones, creating a sense of movement. The elaborately sculpted figures appear to dance around the clock, while holding aloft a small naked cherub holding a garland of flowers in a festive gesture.
The clock is inlaid in the center, surrounded by ornate details and decorated with Arabic numerals in a classical style. Its frame is elegant and discreet, complementing the presence of the figures without detracting from their prominence. The base of the piece is made of red marble, possibly rouge griotte marble, and rests on a support with gilded bronze ornaments featuring scrolls and vegetal motifs typical of the neoclassical style.
This type of clock not only fulfilled its function of marking time, but also served as a symbol of status and refinement in the salons of the time. In it, art and technique merge to create a piece that captures the grace and sensuality of the female figures, while the cherub adds a playful and spiritual touch. This clock is a nod to the Belle Époque's taste for organic forms and exuberant decoration, reflecting early 20th century French society's appreciation for beauty and elegance in everyday objects.
