Juan de Mariana was a Jesuit priest, scholastic, historian and member of the Monarcómacos. He studied at the Complutense University of Alcalá de Henares and was admitted to the Society of Jesus at the age of 17. In 1561 he taught theology in Rome. In 1569 he was sent to Paris, where his expositions of the writings of Thomas Aquinas attracted a large audience. In 1574, due to ill health, he obtained permission to return to Spain. Mariana's great work, Historiae de rebus Hispaniae, first appeared in Toledo in 1592; subsequently ten books were added to the first twenty. It was so well received that Mariana was induced to translate it into Spanish.
