The Chokwe of Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo gained economic power in the mid-19th century through the rubber trade. Economic prosperity and well-organized political units gave rise to court arts of exquisite forms that announced the power of the individual and referenced the Chokwe past.
Court art, owned exclusively by a chief, served as a symbol of his office while referencing Cikungo, thus symbolically linking him to the royal lineage.
