BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pot used to draw water. Grand Kabylia, Algeria, early 20th century.
Terracotta, natural pigments.
Measurements: 15 cm (height).

Pot used to draw water that has been pigmented and polychromed following geometric patterns.

The Kabyle people are an Amazigh group indigenous to the mountains of Kabylia, northeast of Algeria. The Kabylia region is colloquially known as al-qabayel (tribes, Kabyles), but its inhabitants call it tamurt idurar (land of mountains) or tamurt leqvayel (land of Kabyles). Kabylia is part of the Atlas Mountains and is located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. The Imazighen Kabyle people speak a northern Berber language, the Kabyle language. The traditional economy of the area is based on arboriculture and the handicraft industry (tapestry and ceramics).
