BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Set of 3 Kambatta/Hadiya-Gourages-Arsi headrests, Ethiopia, 19th or early 20th century.
Wood
Measurements: approx. 19.5 cm.

Ethiopian headrests are more than just objects; they are cultural expressions rooted in the daily life, mobility, and social identity of pastoralist communities. Their blend of functionality, symbolism, and aesthetics makes them a unique window into Ethiopia's traditions. Abstract lines and shapes are chiseled into their surface, representing both symbolic and decorative patterns. The Arsi, Kambatta and Hadiya ethnic groups use headrests of simple but functional design, often related to their pastoral lifestyle. The Gourages are especially known for their artistic skill. Hand-carved, they are compact and lightweight, easy to carry. Among other uses, they protect the elaborate traditional hairstyles of men and women during rest. In many pastoral cultures, hair is an important expression of identity, and headrests ensure that it remains intact. Portability is another essential aspect for these peoples. Also, headrests can reflect a person's age, wealth or social position.
