BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Egyptian style head of Anubis.
Greenish blue crackle earthenware.
It presents faults and small flaws.
Measurements: 12 cm.

Anubis is one of the most ancient gods of Egypt, and is represented as a large black lying canid, a jackal or wild dog, or as a man with the head of this animal. In the early dynastic period of Egypt (c. 3100 - c. 2686 B.C.), Anubis was portrayed in full animal form, with the head and body of a "jackal." Jackals were strongly associated with cemeteries because they were scavengers that uncovered human bodies and ate their flesh. In the Old Kingdom, Anubis was the most important god of the dead. Although he was replaced in that role by Osiris during the Middle Kingdom. In the late Pharaonic era (664-332 B.C.), Anubis was often depicted as guiding people across the threshold from the world of the living to the afterlife.
