Génia Chef was part of the circles of Soviet Nonconformist Art in Moscow before emigrating to East Berlin in 1985. There he began to be known thanks to the engravings he made based on the work of the Marquis de Sade. Later he moved to Austria, where he furthered his education at the Academy of Fine Arts, obtaining the Fueger Gold Medal. In 1993 he exhibited for the first time in New York, together with other members of the Soviet Nonconformist circle. He is currently represented in the Russian State Museum, the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection at the Jane Woorhees Zimmerli Museum, the Kolodzei Art Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Skopje, the Sigmund Freud Museum of Dreams in St. Petersburg and at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, among other public and private collections.
