BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Grandfather clock. William Gourdain, London, England, 18th century.
Lacquered and painted wood.
Original movement.
Measurements: 247 x 43 x 26 cm.
Clock with a tall case, decorated with scenes inspired by Chinese works showing the typical idealised landscapes of oriental influence, topped by a classicist architectural element at the top. The metal dial is framed by classicist-inspired figures and has Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, framed by another smaller dial with Arabic numerals. On the upper part of the dial, highlighted with vegetal scrolls in relief, is the name and location of the firm responsible for the clock: William Gourdain, a master clockmaker with a workshop in the English capital and not much of his work preserved.
