BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Table clock; Louis Philippe, ca.1840.
Gilt and blued bronze.
It has Paris machinery.
Precise set up.
Measurements: 40 x 30,5 x 10 cm.
Louis Philippe style table clock, made almost entirely of gilt bronze and conceived as a free-standing sculpture standing on an elaborate stepped pedestal. The base is plain and prismatic, with smooth edges that reveal the Empire heritage, with turned feet, chiselled details and a central fan-shaped palmette that comes from the ornamental background of the neoclassical period, a common feature at this time. The intermediate step, more of an ornamental moulding than an independent area, is covered with a moulding of interlaced ribbons, again a very typical neoclassical motif. Above it rises the upper level, which is notable for the representation of a face set in a border and located in the central area. The upper area has a prismatic design with clean geometric forms. It is topped by a sculpture depicting a young lady resting on a blued bronze cushion above the clock case, with black Roman numerals and openwork hands.
