BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Tureen; DANIEL & CHARLES; London, England, 1858.
Engraved, chiseled and embossed silver.
Measurements: 28 x 37 x 21,5 cm.
Weight: 3882 g.
English silver tureen, created in 1858 by the firm of Daniel & Charles. This object is representative of the Victorian style, characterized by its detailed ornamentation and classic symbology. The piece is made of engraved, chiseled and embossed silver. It features an opulent design, highlighting a sculpted bison or buffalo on the top of the lid. The tureen is decorated with fine engraved details and floral ornaments on the rims, showing meticulous goldsmith work. On each side are stylized serpentine shaped handles, inspired by designs of classical antiquity. The legs of the tureen are carved with lions' heads, a symbolic choice representing royalty and protection. Such pieces not only served practical functions at the table, but were also a symbol of status and elegance in the homes of the time. The quality of the silver work makes clear the craftsmanship in mid-19th century England, where decorative and functional silver objects achieved great popularity.
The original Daniel & Charles company was founded by John Houle, a London silversmith and son of John Houle, apprentice to William Rock within the Vintners Company in 1798. The first trademark was registered in 1811 as a silversmith in Clerkenwell, London. It was his two sons, Daniel John Houle and Charles Houle in 1845, who created their own mark in joint partnership, working until 1884, supplying high quality silverware.
