DESCRIPTION

MATÍAS SÁNCHEZ (Germany, 1972).
"The peasants". Sevilla, 2012.
Mixed media on canvas.

Provenance: private collection, Spain.
Measurements: 130 x 162 cm.

A grotesque-looking character, squinting eyes and long nose pinochesca, wrapped in a black cloak and topped with a top hat, raises his thumb as a sign of accepting the closure of a deal with a girl resolved with the same caricatured and vehement stroke. The sly smile of the magician-like character suggests something shady in his intentions. Matías Sánchez has accustomed us to this type of unsolved stories, in whose mystery lies its strength. The broken stroke alternating with an agitated and serpentine pulse is also typical of the author. The background is pure chromatic turbulence in which this couple of "peasants" and their dog emerge like creatures from another world.

Matias Sanchez was born in Germany in 1972 and is self-taught. He has always felt an impulse for art that led him to develop an artistic career. Matias Sanchez made his first exhibition in Cavecanem in 2001 and a year later his work was exhibited at Arco where he received a warm welcome from the critics. In 2003 he repeated his experience at the Contemporary Art Fair held in Madrid, being his work collected and disseminated in the newspaper El País. This was a turning point in his career, which led to numerous solo and group exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. Among which include the exhibition at the gallery Begoña Mallone (Madrid), Javier Marín (Málaga), Valle Ortí (Valencia), Espacio Liquido (Gijón), "Christopher Cutts Gallery" (Toronto - Canada) and Costantini Art Gallery (Milan - Italy), his work has been exhibited in various spaces of contemporary art reference example of this are the CAAM - Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) or the CAC Malaga. In addition to ARCO, MACO 2013 - Mexico Arte Contemporáneo, Art Stage Singapore 2013, Art Monaco 2013, India Art Fair 2013, Contemporary Istanbul 2012, Art Toronto 2012, Art Moscovo 2012 and Beirut Art Fair 2012.
