DESCRIPTION

CARLOS EVANGELISTA (Salamanca, 1943).
"North-south", 2002.
Cardboard construction.

Carlos Evangelista began his artistic training in a self-taught way, starting to paint in 1960. Years later he moved to Madrid, where he came into contact with the artistic environment and began to collaborate in various workshops and studios of applied arts. It was from this moment when he began a series of constructivist reliefs, collaborating with the architecture of many buildings. His work is characterized by a great multifaceted character especially in terms of support. For more than four decades his personal work experiments with various materials, studying their intrinsic formal and structural possibilities, concerned about the interrelations between the Fine Arts and the arts applied to architecture and the urban environment in a perspective close to abstract expressionism, his sculptures show an interrelationship between the material capacities of the chosen material and its ability to interact with the void, that is to say with the space in which they inhabit.
In his career Carlos Evangelista has had exhibitions in Kreisler, Múltiple 4.17, Meriem Meziam and Marita Segovia galleries (Madrid), and in different spaces of great international artistic relevance such as the Villa d'arte Gallery in Colombia, Rauman Museum in Finland or the 49 Gallery in New York. In addition, he has directed and curated different biennials and exhibitions, as well as the realization of several scenographies. His work has been recognized with several awards such as the Banesto Prize at the Biennial of Zamora in 1971 and, among others, the First Prize Caja España in 2006. His creations are part of museums as well as national and foreign public and private collections.
