Hundertwasser repudiated straight lines in art and urbanism: "The blind, cowardly and stupid use of the straight line has turned our cities into desolate wastelands from the aesthetic, spiritual and ecological point of view". The Austrian artist dreamed of a world full of color and magic, and dedicated his art to achieving it: as a painter, architect, performer, designer... He was a "total artist" ahead of his time and an active militant of environmentalism. Born in Austria in a family with a Jewish mother, he changed his name many times (sometimes Hundertwasser was known as Stowasser, Regentag or Dunkelbunt), and this helped him to adopt a complex personality. Hundertwasser gained notoriety for his multi-colored paintings, and today he is well known for his revolutionary architectural designs, often incorporating features of natural landscapes, through the use of irregular shapes in the design of his buildings. The so-called: Hundertwasserhaus are low-cost apartments in Vienna, whose undulating floors are the main feature ("an undulating floor is a melody for the feet"), roofs covered with earth and vegetation, and large trees growing inside the rooms, with their branches extending out of the windows. The influence of his work has been enormous. His work has been used on flags, stamps, coins, posters, schools, churches, public toilets and has been adopted in New Zealand in the design of buildings. His most famous flag is the Koru Flag; he designed stamps for the Cape Verde Islands and for the United Nations, as well as the Geneva postal administration. On February 14, 1981 he was awarded the Austrian Grand Prix for Visual Arts.
