The Spaniard Manuel Ferrán Bayona takes up here the theme of Titian, "The Emperor Charles V with a dog" (Museo del Prado), who also relied on previous models, specifically Jacob Seisenegger.
Manuel Ferrán, after studying at the school of La Lonja in Barcelona, traveled to Paris to complete his studies under the orders of Thomas Couture, who would also teach Francisco Sans Cabot. He specialized in historical and genre painting, and like many other painters of his time, he also painted portraits. He exhibited his work both in Barcelona and in some National Exhibitions in Madrid, such as the one in 1860 where he presented the painting Antonio Pérez liberated by the Aragonese people in 1591. He was a professor of drawing in the same place where he was trained, La Lonja (1888-1892). His works can be seen in the Gallery of Illustrious Catalans of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Saint George and in the Victor Balaguer Library-Museum,6 among other museums in Catalonia.
