Late at night, or perhaps already in the early hours of the morning, three characters have fallen asleep after many too many drinks, while the fourth friend continues to steep his elbow. An empty bottle of wine slips from the hand of a woman who sleeps on the floor, leaning on her left hand; her friend dozes on a chair and the young man with a beard has fallen asleep with his tongue out. All three show rosy cheeks and a deep lethargy. The painter reproduces with accurate technique the candelabra (whose candles are still lit), a leafy bouquet of roses and half-consumed wine glasses.
