A young woman with carmine lips and a faint crimson glow tingeing her pearly skin holds with her right hand a carnival mask. Wrapped in loose satin garments, her kinky hair shimmers with golden reflections. She stands on a terrace, and behind her, the Venetian night unfolds, with its gondolas gliding through the lagoon in front of the palatial buildings. The young woman exudes freshness and good humor. She smiles and her lively eyes seem to enjoy contemplating the party outside the frame.
François Martin-Kavel was a French painter and illustrator of genre and still life, born in Paris and living in Neuilly-sur-Seine. He is known for his portraits of women, in the manner of dancers, nymphs and odalisques, wrapped in exotic costumes or nude. He made his debut and exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1881 he received a medal for his work.
