Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 42 x 65 cm; 56,5 x 78 cm (frame).
Oil painting attributed to the French painter Gilbert Murat, who trained at the Jena Academy in Rome. A small mosque is silhouetted against a twilight sky. The lakeside landscape with figures wrapped in robes and veils vibrates under the lights of an autumn sunset that toast the leaves of the dense trees.
A pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault, Merry-Joseph Blondel and Louis Hersent at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Jean Murat was well received at an early age. Eucharis", "Charles VII" and "Agnès Sorel". In 1837 he won a second Grand Prix de Rome in painting for his "Noah officiating a sacrifice when leaving the ark". On his return from Italy, Murat set up his studio in Paris, where he continued to devote himself to historical and religious painting. Among the works he exhibited during his last period were Hagar in the Desert (1842), for which he won a second medal, the Lamentations of Jeremiah (1844), for which he won a first medal, Christ Preaching Charity (1853), and others. In addition to these paintings, he produced decorative works for several churches, in particular the church of Saint-Séverin in Paris. His work is kept at the École des beaux-arts in Paris.
