DESCRIPTION
Flemish school; XVII century.

In the first quarter of the XVII century a new formula is developed in the Flemish environment, within the genre of the painting of flowers, which, recreated by a large group of artists and workshops, will reach throughout the century an outstanding success in much of the European area: the garland of flowers as a framing and enhancing element of a central theme of religious character. Brueghel de Velurs was the initiator of this type of compositions, especially linked in his work to the representation of the Virgin and Child. However, it was his disciple, the Jesuit Daniel Seghers, who was the dominant figure in this specialized production and the creator of a prototype that would serve as a model for the numerous Flemish and foreign followers and imitators of the genre.
The floral repertoire combined in the work offers an attractive variety, identifying a good number of species: tulips, blue anemones, roses and chrysanthemums and also a blue hyacinth, which stand out in their wide chromatic range against the dark green background of the foliage that articulates the whole set. Next to this border of flowers, inscribed in the center, we see a medallion where the Holy Family is represented. The Virgin appears seated, in profile to the viewer, with the Child in her lap, embracing him in a maternal gesture. Next to them, but in the background, is Saint Joseph, dressed in brown tones, which serve to integrate him into the background and prevent him from standing out above the two main figures.
