In a sober interior rests the figure of a small sleeping child, whose golden halo around the head indicates that it is the representation of the Baby Jesus. The image takes place in an inconcrete interior where only the corporeality of Jesus rises as a model of perfection for all the other children, the Child Jesus is perennially portrayed as an example of holiness, virtue and love.
The image, which is inspired by models widely popularized during the Baroque period, refers to a specific artistic genre of the 16th century, which could be translated as "As we are born, so we die". This was a popular subject in Flanders and Germany during that period, and is strongly related to the more popular Vanitas still lifes. Within the genre of vanities, which possessed so much relevance, capturing the transience of life was one of the themes that most concerned Baroque artists. Vanities denounce the relativity of knowledge and the vanity of the human race subject to the passage of time, to death. Its title and conception are related to a passage from Ecclesiastes: "vanitas vanitatum omnia vanitas" ("vanity of vanities, all is vanity").
