In this painting of baroque period, Isabella the Catholic is represented in bust, with a tunic with a cowl. The green tunic is trimmed with gold thread, and of the same golden color is the cross sewn on the hood. His features are extremely austere. Because of its stylistic and symbolic characteristics, the portrait connects with the values and historical representation of this key figure in the history of Spain. Isabella is historically associated with the defense of Catholicism and the unity of Spain under one faith. During the Baroque and Counter-Reformation periods, these representations emphasize the sacred and heroic character of historical figures, placing them as examples of virtue and loyalty to the Church. Likewise, the tunic and veil covering the hair could be a symbol of humility and recollection, associated with religious orders, and in this case emphasizes Elizabeth's personal piety.
