BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

English school; circa 1690.
"Portrait of a lady".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 77 x 62 cm.
The present canvas continues the stylistic and formal characteristics of the work of Peter Lely. It is a portrait very much in the English aristocratic taste of the XVII century, with the young woman of beautiful features arranged in an elegant position. On a formal level, it is worth mentioning how the figure is strongly illuminated, especially in the face, the chest and the pinkish mantle. The brushstroke used by the artist is changeable, much more precise, practically invisible, on the face, hair and bust of the woman, but looser on the dress and background.
Pieter Van del Faes Lely (1618-1680) was an English portraitist clearly influenced by Anton Van Dyck. The son of a Dutch father, Lely studied in Haarlem. In 1641 he decided to move to London, where he imbibed English taste. He specialized in portraits and was appointed painter to Charles I's chamber. Museums such as London and Dublin, and collectors of Hampton Court and Windsor own works by this well-known artist.
