BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

JEAN D'YLEN (Paris, 1886-1938).
"Filver/Ceintures/Bretelles," 1925.
Lithograph poster on paper.
Measurements: 119 x 80 cm; 125,5 x 86 cm (frame).

While early in his career he was involved in jewelry design, it was in 1919 that D'Ylen became a full-time poster artist, signing an exclusive contract with the firm Vercasson in 1922. It is possible that the job offer was due to the fact that he was a sincere admirer and disciple of Cappiello, who had been Vercasson's previous star. The success of D'Ylen's career led to his posters being on billboards all over the walls of France. Soon his creations were spread throughout Europe, England (by Weiner), Sweden, Holland, the United States, Canada and Australia. From 1934, a dispute with Vercasson led him to work directly for Weiner in London. He designed for Esso, BP, Daily Herald, Power Ethyl and was widely recognized as a leader in his field. In 1980, an exhibition of 72 of his posters was held at the Forney Library at the Hotel de Sens in Paris.

Poster art was a turning point for advertising in the early 20th century. Due to the great demand, many painters expanded their business to make advertisements for circuses, traveling troupes and municipal festivals visiting their cities, as well as advertising for beverages and liquors, perfumes, soaps, cosmetics and other products.
