MIGUEL ÁNGEL CAMPANO (Madrid, 1948 - Cercedilla, 2018).
Untitled.

This lithograph by Miguel Ángel Campano, a key figure of geometric abstraction, is representative of the turn towards black and white that the painter carried out in the nineties. More specifically, it is part of a corpus of works in which he started from the point as "minimum expression of geometry" and with which he paid homage to the artist Daniel Buren, being the dialogue with abstract and conceptual artists another constant of these years.
Miguel Angel Campano is characterized for being one of the outstanding artists of the 80's, a period in which he returns to the pictorial freedom untied from the political and social conditions of previous years, thus vindicating painting for painting's sake. His career is one of the faithful examples of the Spanish artistic renovation based on the exploration of the tensions between abstraction and figuration leading to the creation of his own language. His life and career went through different stages in which he was influenced by the different contexts and people he met. This constant and changing influence allowed him to draw from different sources such as literature and popular culture. After a first phase centered on automatism, Campano later delved into geometric abstraction under the influence of the Cuenca Group monitored by Fernando Zóbel, Gustavo Torner and Gerardo Rueda. His works have been part of key exhibitions for the settlement of the pictorial renovation being present in the Juana Mordí Gallery, in the Municipal Museum of Madrid, IVAM of Valencia, in the Maison des Arts Georges Pompidou in France or in the José Guerrero Center in Granada. His work was recognized after being awarded in 1996 with the National Prize of Plastic Arts.
