BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Large pair of candlesticks; After François Rémond, c. 1920.
Gilt bronze, patinated with applique and gilt metal.
It presents some damage on the surface and on the base.
Measurements: 123 x 37 x 37 cm (candlesticks, x2) ; 94 x 47 cm (stands x2). Total height: 217 cm.
This is an excellent pair of eight-light candelabra of historicist aesthetics, which closely follow the design carried out by François Remon. On a large pedestal conceived as a pedestal stand two classical female figures worked in round bulk, endowed with grace and naturalism in gestures and movements. Each pair of figures holds up their heads, as if they were caryatids, the arms of the candelabra itself. The whole has been worked with precious attention to detail, with each figure, each leaf, each flower and each petal treated individually.
François Rémond was a French master metalworker and bronze gilder who was renowned in his time and whose work is still highly appreciated. His works include chandeliers, decorative clock cases and the bronze ornamentation of elaborate furniture made for the elite of the time. He began his apprenticeship in 1763 and in 1774, he became master of the guild of bronze gilders. He was a prolific worker and became one of the most highly regarded gilders, carvers and bronze casters of his time, producing works in great demand by the royal court. He worked with bronze caster Pierre Gouthière on some of his greatest works before 1788.Both Rémond and Gouthière were known for their skill in creating matte and burnished gilding. They made elaborate gilt bronze mounts for clocks, furniture or statues that incorporated imaginary or unusual creatures, such as camels and ostriches.
