Exceptional and monumental padlock. Italy, 17th century.

Padlock made of wrought iron, with its key, consisting of the lock case and an upper ring with opening. In spite of its robust and compact character, the piece has a poly-lobed lower profile and is embellished with molded motifs (scallops and scrolls carved in relief).
Padlocks such as the one we are now bidding for served as unbreakable locks for safes where the wealth and important documents of the medieval kingdoms were kept.
