Follows models of SEVERO CALZETTA DE RAVENNA (Ravenna, ca. 1465-1543). Italy, 19th century.
Oil lamp with satyr.
Patinated bronze.
A similar model is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Measurements: 24.5 x 13 x 13 cm.

Bronze that originally served as an oil lamp. It is a singular piece in patinated bronze with a support in the form of eagle claws resolved with naturalism and topped with an expressive satyr bust on a mixtilinear stem. The back of the head opened to fill with oil. The mouth, open and sticking out its tongue, contained a tube for the wick.

Severo Calzetta da Ravenna (nicknamed the Master of Dragons) was a sculptor who worked between Ravenna, Ferrara and Padua between the late 15th and mid-16th centuries. A number of bronze objects preserved in different museums around the world are attributed to him. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, emulations of Calzetta's creations resumed, a fact that can be related to the tradition of the Grand Tour: these were objects intended for enlightened amateurs.
