In heraldry, the shield or coat of arms is the physical support, located in the centre of the armorial bearings (heraldic achievement). The main element of a heraldic achievement is the shield or coat of arms, on which the coat of arms is depicted. The coat of arms is the central and main element of the armorial bearings, it is the privileged support on which the arms are represented. However, several arms may be represented on the same coat of arms, without necessarily representing a single person: it may be the union of two arms representing a marriage or the superimposition of numerous arms. A coat of arms then represents a single coat of arms or an alliance of arms. In all cases, the coat of arms graphically delimits the subject of the composition and is sufficient to identify the arms or an alliance of arms.
