BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MARK BRAZIER-JONES (New Zealand, 1956).
Sconces "Olympia", 1994.
Copper, glass and blued metal.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 75 x 32 x 17 cm (x2).
The inspiration of classical antiquity in this pair of sconces is evident, not only in the name, but also in the form. The upper area of each wall lamp has a circle or crown with rhomboidal figures that in an abstract way seem to represent a laurel wreath. In addition, the format itself invites us to think of the Olympic torch.
Artist, sculptor, furniture maker, lighting designer and engineer, Mark Brazier-Jones was born in New Zealand in 1956 and moved to the UK at the age of 12. After graduating with a degree in Ceramic Sculpture, Brazier-Jones began working in the music video industry. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she designed and built sets for the likes of David Bowie, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Freddy Mercury and Elton John.In 1987 she conceived her first limited edition chair, the Wingback, which sold out before the start of 1988. Brazier-Jones' work is in major museum collections around the world, including the Victoria & Albert in London, the Museum of Art & Design in New York and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as many important private collections.
