Fernandino style extending dining table; Spain, c. 1820-1830.

Extending dining table, characterized by the emphatic and markedly geometric volume that determined the furniture of the early nineteenth century. It is a table supported by four bronze legs of spherical format on which a mixtilinear base is placed. The carved and gilded wood shaft stands out above it, its design inspired by elements of classical antiquity, as was customary at that time. Finally, the rounded top is extensible, as is the mechanism of the base, which allows for the establishment of four support legs.
The fernandino style is the one developed in the decorative arts -especially furniture- in Spain during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1814-1833). It succeeded the Empire style and preceded the Elizabethan style.
