The Tro-Cortesian Codex, also known as the Mayan Codex of Madrid, is a facsimile edition published in 1991 by the Testimonio publishing house, which accurately reproduces one of the four pre-Hispanic Mayan codices that have survived to the present day. This unique work, currently kept in the Museum of America in Madrid, dates from the 14th century and constitutes an exceptional testimony of the written and ritual culture of the Mayan world. Its arrival in Spain took place in two moments: one part was brought by Hernán Cortés and the other by the religious Juan de Tro, which gave rise to its modern name.
The codex is made on amate paper, with writing and drawing on both sides, and measures 6.82 meters long. Its folded format in the form of a folding screen maintains the original structure of the manuscript. It is composed of 160 pages distributed in two sections, in a format of 13 x 23 cm each. The content focuses on divinatory and ritual almanacs that deal with topics related to hunting, agriculture, weaving and religious ceremonies, providing a valuable insight into the Mayan cosmovision.
Accompanying the facsimile is a 136-page study book, in 17 x 23.5 cm format, bound in paperback with dust jacket and flaps. This volume includes an introduction by historian Manuel Ballesteros Gaibrois and a specialized study by Miguel Rivera Dorado, leading authorities on Mesoamerican history. Although there is a version in English, by default the copy is delivered with texts in Spanish.
The set is presented in an elegant gray velvet-covered slipcase and has been published in a limited and numbered edition, certified by notarial act. This edition received in 1991 the First Prize for the best edited book in the category of Bibliophilia and Facsimile, awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, which confirms its high production quality and documentary value. It is an essential piece for scholars of the pre-Columbian world, bibliophiles and collectors of unique historical works.
