Facsimile edition that brings together the two famous treaties signed in Tordesillas in 1494 between the Catholic Monarchs and John II of Portugal, by means of which both crowns agreed on the division of the New World, consolidating their respective spheres of expansion and colonization. This publication includes the complete and high fidelity reproduction of both historical documents: the so-called African Treaty or Treaty of the Fisheries, in Spanish, and the Atlantic Treaty or Political Treaty, in Portuguese.
The first treaty, kept in the Archivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (Lisbon), is presented in a facsimile version with an original lead seal 7.7 cm in diameter. The second treatise, kept in the Archivo General de Indias (Seville), is also reproduced with its corresponding 5 cm lead seal. Each treatise consists of 16 pages, carefully edited to preserve the texture and appearance of the original.
The facsimiles are accompanied by a 142-page study volume, bound in paperback with dust jacket. This book, written by experts Tomás Marín Martínez and José Manuel Ruiz Asencio, includes the paleographic transcription of the original text in Portuguese together with its translation into modern Spanish, as well as the transcription of the treatise in medieval Spanish. The study historically contextualizes both documents and analyzes their diplomatic and geopolitical importance in the configuration of the modern world order.
Published as part of a limited, numbered, and notarized edition, the Treaties of Tordesillas I and II are an exceptionally valuable source for researchers of colonial history, international law, and 15th-century Iberian diplomacy, as well as for collectors of historical bibliophilic works.
