The Quest for the Holy Grail.
Valencia: Edición Grial, 1997.
Limited facsimile edition with book study by Carlos Alvar, copy 85/870.
Attached notarial certificate.
Leather binding. With slipcase.
Measurements: 35 x 45 cm (slipcase).
Facsimile edition of the 15th century manuscript, Ms. 527, containing The Quest for the Holy Grail (Roman de la Quête du Graal), preserved in the Municipal Library of Dijon, capital of the Burgundy region in France. This copy is part of an exclusive edition of 870 numbered copies, certified by a notary public.
The facsimile has a handmade binding in leather over boards, with gilt engravings and spines also decorated in gold. It is accompanied by a complementary volume of studies, bound in leather spine, which includes a literary analysis and translation by Carlos Alvar, from the University of Alcalá, together with an iconographic study of the miniatures by François Avril, curator of the National Library of France.
Both volumes are presented in a matching protective slipcase. Manuscript 527 is considered one of the most beautiful of its time thanks to its 46 miniatures of remarkable quality, its carefully executed cursive script and the excellence of the parchment used, all indications that its recipient belonged to a high-ranking bibliophile elite at a time - the mid-15th century - when French kings and nobles encouraged the creation of manuscript works of great artistic wealth.
Although the exact origin of the codex has not been determined with certainty, it is believed to have been produced in western France during the 15th century. It is composed of 163 parchment folios written in double columns, which include the complete version of The Quest for the Holy Grail, along with a fragment of the third prose version of Tristan.
