José María de Cossío y Martínez Fortún was a Spanish writer and polygrapher, member of the Royal Spanish Academy and author of a monumental bullfighting treatise. The "Technical and Historical Treatise" is the most extensive and documented treatise that exists on bullfighting, focusing mainly on bullfighting from its origins, a work that has become a reference since its appearance.
Defined by the bullfighting critic Antonio Díaz-Cañabate as "the Bible of bullfighting", it is a documented analysis and a journey through the history of bullfighting, the characters, the bullrings, the regulations of Spain and Latin America, the technique and arts of bullfighting, the cattle ranches, the vocabulary, the breeding of the fighting bull, the influence of bullfighting in the arts and literature, including the bullfighting chronicles since 1763.
