Russian icon of the XIX century.
"Evangelist".
Painting and gold leaf on wood.
It presents some lack of polychrome.
Measurements: 29,5 x 25,5 x 2,5 cm.

Russian icon with the representation of one of the four evangelists, which is identified by the legend in Cyrillic that accompanies it. Of frontal representation and linear drawing, it adopts the gesture of blessing with one hand and shows the Gospels with the other. As is usual in the palette of Russian icons, the sumptuousness of the robe has been described with a palette of intense carmine, gold and cobalt tones.
Orthodox icons respond to a tradition that is alien to painting of a representational nature. In the icons everything has a symbolism: the color must express the inner luminosity, a light that does not come from the physical world. In them there is no usual space, just as there are no conventional events. The icon is an open window to a world of a spiritual nature.
