BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish school of the first half of the XVII century.
"Saint Nicholas of Tolentino".
Carved wood, polychrome and stewed.
It presents faults in the carving and polychrome.
Measurements: 100 x 47 x 27 cm.

The monastic tonsure, the hairless face and the sumptuous habit identify Saint Nicholas of Tolentino. The carving presents a stew that contributes to give the tunic a textured finish, emulating the gold brocade of the liturgical vestments. Other attributes with which we usually see this saint represented are the star in the middle of the chest, the book of rules, the lily and the crucifix. Nicholas of Tolentino (Sant'Angelo in Pontano, 1245 - Tolentino, 1305) was an Italian Catholic friar, priest, mystic and the first saint of the Order of Saint Augustine. He is considered the protector of the souls in Purgatory, and intercessor for justice, motherhood, childhood and health. His protection is invoked by devotees for the victims of plagues.
