BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Italian school of the XVII-XVIII century
"Bacchus".
Carved Carrara marble.
Measurements: 60 x 46 x 35 cm; 75 cm. total height with pedestal.
Carrara marble bust of the god Bacchus, recognizable by the branches adorning his hair. His face is serene, with a straight nose, almond-shaped eyes and harmonious features clearly inspired by classical Greek statuary. Her body is covered by a lacerna secured by a brooch on the right shoulder of the divinity, repeating the classicist idea that dominates the whole.
Bacchus, god of wine, was the Roman version of Dionysus. Son of Jupiter and the mortal Semele, he had an unusual birth: his mother died before giving birth, and Jupiter had to sew him on his thigh until he was ready to be born. Raised by nymphs in the woods, Bacchus discovered the art of making wine and spread it around the world, teaching its cultivation and enjoying life without ties. He was always accompanied by a retinue of satyrs and maenads, who feasted in his honor with music and frenzied dances. His parties, the famous Bacchanals, were so wild that the Senate banned them in 186 B.C. His cult lasted for centuries and his image remains a symbol of pleasure, art and transgression.
