BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of ewers, ca. 1880.
Bronze.
Measurements: 44cm
This pair of ewers in bronze, dated approximately 1880, is an example of the quality of the decorative art of the XIX century. Both examples show an intricate design with classical and baroque influences, standing out for its rich ornamentation and detailed sculptural work.
Each ewer is crowned by a human figure that seems to interact with the handle, adding dynamism and an implicit narrative to the pieces. The bases are richly decorated with mythological scenes that include sea creatures, human figures and fantastical animals. These images integrate seamlessly with the overall structure, giving the impression that the scenes emerge organically from the material itself.
The level of detail in the bronze is impressive, from the plant motifs bordering the main body to the figures holding the pieces, which appear to be in motion, almost carrying the weight of the vessel on their backs. The patinated finish of the bronze adds depth and highlights the shadows and contours of the design, giving a classic and timeless look.
From an artistic perspective, these pieces reflect the mastery of 19th century bronze work, when artisans sought to fuse functionality and beauty. The ewers, traditionally used to wash hands before meals, acquire here a ceremonial and decorative character, intended to display the status and refined taste of their owners. Their presence in a space symbolizes not only utility, but also an appreciation for art and classical mythology, making them objects of great historical and aesthetic value.
