BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Pair of sculptures Napoleon III, second half of the 19th century.
Patinated bronze and gilded bronze.
Measurements: 27 cm.

Pair of bronze sculptures dating from the time of Napoleon III. Each one represents a young cherub, mythological figure associated with childhood and purity, holding on his head a glass of considerable proportions. The cherubs' naked, muscular bodies contrast with the delicacy of their childlike faces. The figures are on white pedestals.
The vessels, classical and elegant in form, are richly decorated with geometric and floral motifs. The bronze has been patinated to achieve a golden color that contrasts with the darker tone of the figures. The pose of the cherubs is dynamic and balanced, conveying a sense of effort and concentration.
These sculptures are an excellent example of the Napoleon III style, characterized by its eclecticism and taste for ornamentation. The combination of materials, the richness of the details and the choice of a mythological theme are elements typical of this style. The sculptures represent an idealization of youth and beauty, values highly appreciated in the society of the time. Cherubs, as symbols of purity and innocence, were a very popular representation during the reign of Napoleon III. Moreover, their association with the divine world gave them an aura of mystery and spirituality.
