DESCRIPTION

Vase with lid: Italy, c. 1850.
Ivory.

Measurements: 56 x 37 x 27 cm.
This Italian vase, crafted in ivory circa 1850, is a masterful piece reflecting the craftsmanship and decorative refinement of the period. The structure is richly sculpted, showing an extraordinary level of detail and dedication in each element. At the top, a cherub or putto perches on an open shell, holding itself with a natural and carefree gesture, adding a playful and ethereal touch to the piece.
The central body of the vase is decorated with two figures of cherubs seated on a base of shells sculpted in relief. These cherubs, with sweet and restful expressions, hold decorative elements in their hands, integrating harmoniously with the design. Flanking the cherubs are two horse heads in relief, sculpted with great realism and dynamism, evoking strength and movement. Their heads, with lively expressions and detailed manes, add a vigorous and contrasting aspect to the delicacy of the cherubs.
The base of the vase has marine motifs, with figures of fish or dolphins with open mouths, which support the upper structure. These figures, with details of scales and fins, reinforce the aquatic and mythological theme of the whole, providing a symbolic connection to the marine world that was common in Italian decorative aesthetics of the mid-19th century.
This ivory vase is not only a symbol of the technical mastery of the artisans of the period, but also exemplifies the penchant for mythological and natural themes. The intricacy of the reliefs, along with the perfection in detail and the polished finish of the ivory, make this piece an outstanding example of the luxury and elegance of 19th century Italian decorative objects.
