DESCRIPTION

"Young laughing girl", ca. 1900.
Sculpture in modeled and fired clay.
Signed on the base.
Measurements: 51 x 27 x 22 cm.

Georges Van Der Straeten was a Belgian sculptor who excelled in the field of sculpture despite having initially trained as a lawyer. His artistic inclination led him to study under the guidance of Kasteleyn and Jef Lambeaux, and throughout his career, he exhibited his work in Salons between 1885 and 1912.

In 1903 he received the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, in recognition of his skill and career. He also received several awards, including a silver medal at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition.

Van Der Straeten enjoyed great fame for his elegant depictions of young Parisian women, whom he endowed with a carefree and seductive nature. His style, characterized by a sensual female representation, was well received by the society of the time, which found in his representations a reflection of life at the beginning of the 20th century.
